  • Budget hotel chain targets live music fans

    Proven popularity

Travelodge has cemented its position as the UK's fastest-growing hotel chain by exchanging contracts on two new hotels, worth over £24 million. The 200-bed venues are to be built within a stone's throw of two of the UK's biggest music venues: the NEC in Birmingham, and the MEN Arena in Manchester.

Other recently-secured Travelodge builds are near the Liverpool Echo Arena, Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena, and the London Excel. The targeting of these venues is due to existing Travelodge branches near to music venues and arenas hitting 100 per cent occupancy after major events. MD for development Paul Harvey said: "The explosion in the popularity of live music and comedy events over recent years saw our hotels located near to arenas outperform expectations during the recession".

    Why Travelodge appeals

Because many concert goers live outside the cities, and events often finish too late to use public transport, an overnight stay after a gig is becoming an increasingly popular option. However, considering the cost of tickets and transport, it's no wonder budget accommodation is proving so popular. Many low-cost hotels, hostels and B&Bs could capitalise on the live music boom if they are located near a popular venue, but as the success of Travelodge proves, good quality hotel supplies are essential to draw in guests.

Travelodge's £19 beds and 24-hour reception make it ideal for shoestring budgets, but it's still a far cry from 'roughing it'. Continue reading

  • Bed bugs biting back

Experts urge hoteliers to learn the signs of infestation and check bedding regularly

Google employees were left itchy when bed bugs were discovered at their Manhattan office. It’s the latest story in a summer of bed bug panic in New York, during which a helpline set up specifically to deal with the problem received over 13,000 calls. However, pest controllers have warned that this is a pandemic, and not limited to New York.

UK hoteliers should be particularly vigilant to prevent any infestation of the bloodsuckers spreading. Tell-tale signs such as itching will not be obvious if you’re not sleeping in the bed yourself, but bed bugs often leave evidence that they've spent the night, particularly in corners and creases. Sheets need to be washed at high temperatures to stand a chance of killing these pests. Continue reading

  • Duvet Tog Ratings Explained

What does a Tog Rating mean and which tog rating is suitable for you?

Some common misconceptions are that the tog rating is an indication of the quality or weight of a duvet. This is the not the case. Duvets work by trapping heat from the body. A Tog rating describes the warmth of “Thermal Resistance” or a product and is widely used in the UK to explain the warmth level of duvets, the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet will be. However, tog ratings should only be used as a rough guide to how warm you’ll be. Continue reading
